“XFARM” supporting about 1,000 laboratory staff members.

A service called “XFARM” operated by Software Engineering and Operation Technology Project, to which I belong, supports the R&D environment inside the laboratory. In the service, we handle infrastructure development, service development and advanced operation, etc. that support research activities so that laboratory staff members can devote themselves to their own research. Technological progress of the cloud service has also brought about a positive effect on the field of research but various tasks, at the same time, including environment development arise for using these services. The “XFARM” plays a role to undertake everything about these tasks.

One-stop solution for the environment development.

Since it was necessary for laboratory staff members to place an order and execute settings in each department to use the cloud service, it has been necessary for them to spare time in developing the environments. In addition, if different equipment is installed depending on a case, when an unexpected situation such as failure occurred, it also took time to restore it. Under those circumstances, if we create a specialized team for infrastructure development to support research activities in the laboratory aiming at integration, we believed that quick operation at lower costs would be possible. That is why we launched the “XFARM” service.

Our work begins with setting the service ready for use based on a service order issued by each department. There are many kinds of requests, such as using as many servers as possible, preparing network environments that enable even remote operation, and using a server with GPU installed. In “XFARM”, we proceed with the introduction from purchasing necessary equipment to building the system environment, taking account of combinations with external services. Bulk purchasing of required equipment for our laboratory was also effective in reduction of costs. Since any department needs not to have less frequently-used equipment, collective ordering has enabled avoiding duplicated ownership. In addition, since we can collectively manage information or operation manuals, etc. for the installation, we can also quickly respond to failure.

Contribution to business companies modeled on our laboratories

While the “XFARM” currently operates for internal projects of the laboratory, schemes and technologies acquired by the execution of the service have potential for helping external businesses. For example, there are still many inevitable areas for settings by human hands in environment construction. If you make even one mistake in the settings, the system will not operate, and many users will be in trouble. This does not allow you to make any mistake. Therefore, this compels a worker in charge to work under a stressful circumstance. If these tasks can be automated, human errors will be reduced and stress on workers can be alleviated. Through the “XFARM”, we would like to find schemes and technologies that provide people with ideal workplaces.
