In this area, we are exploring the use of the Photonics-Electronics Convergence Devices and Data-Centric Infrastructure (DCI) to realize innovative network services not possible with conventional technologies. One of these is the All-Photonics Network (APN). By providing an optical wavelength path for each customer, and connecting only through optical processing without optical/electrical conversion or electrical processing in the middle of the communication path, it enables low-power and wide-band data transfer.
In March 2023, NTT EAST and NTT West launched the commercial services of APN IOWN1.0.
Compared to existing services, it is possible to provide a communication environment with a higher capacity, 1/200 delay, and no fluctuation in delay. This enables us to provide new user experiences that have been difficult with previous network services, such as detailed work from remote locations, such as telemedicine and smart factories, and esports, which guarantees a fair competitive environment even between remote venues.
In order to promote the commercial launch of APN IOWN 1.0, we conducted demonstrations such as remote real-time ensemble, remote stand-up comedy, and remote dance lessons. By experiencing the co-creation and appreciation of new art, as well as new ways of sports lessons, we are expanding the image of our users and promoting efforts to achieve feedbacks to our R&D.
In the future, we plan to further advance APN by realizing APN's unique advantages, such as shorter lead times for line installation and expansion, higher capacity, and NW quality assurance, compared to the previous use of dark fibers.
We also plan to consider the application of APN to data center connections, smart factories, and 6G services by data center operators while receiving diverse requirements and feedback from customers.
